National Foundation Day falls on Saturday, October 3, with an observed holiday on Monday, October 5. Expect stronger domestic demand for hotels, express buses, rental cars and some KTX departures. City attractions remain usable, but a spontaneous Friday-evening train to a famous mountain or festival city is a poor place to test your luck.
Choose this window if you want:
- outdoor festivals and comfortable city walking;
- a Seoul–Suwon or Seoul–Andong culture route;
- Busan before the middle of the month becomes busier with the film festival;

Do not choose it only because a social-media post labels October as “peak autumn.” In Seoul, the first days of the month often look more green than orange.
October 6–11: Excellent Events, Busy Transport
The 31st Busan International Film Festival runs from October 6 to 15, 2026. The Suwon Hwaseong Festival is scheduled for October 4–11, and Hangul Day falls on Friday, October 9. That creates another three-day weekend.
This can be a brilliant week if you have a specific event in mind. It can also punish vague planning. Book the hotel in the event city first, then secure the long-distance transport, and only then add smaller attractions.

This is the window I would normally choose for a first visit. The holiday weekends are over, major events continue, mountain temperatures are cooler, and early autumn color becomes more plausible at higher elevations.
It is still too early to promise peak leaves across Seoul. Instead of designing the entire trip around foliage, keep one flexible day. Check the short-range forecast and current color reports after arriving, then use that day for a mountain, palace garden or regional excursion.
A strong seven-day flow is:
- three or four nights in Seoul;
- one flexible outdoor day from Seoul;
- one night in Gyeongju;
- two nights in Busan, if your flights allow the direction.

October 22–31: Better Color Odds, Colder Edges
Late October gives you a stronger chance of autumn color in northern mountain areas and a growing amount of color in city parks and historic districts. It also brings colder mornings, darker evenings and crowded foliage destinations on weekends.
Plan outdoor days on weekdays when possible. Start early, but not with the fantasy that every bus connection will line up perfectly. Mountain access roads can slow down, cable-car queues can grow quickly, and sunset arrives earlier than it did in summer.
