Nami Island is worth considering if you want a tree-lined walk, a short ferry crossing and a slower day outside Seoul. It is less convincing if you want wilderness, dislike busy photo spots or have only two days to explore the capital. Think landscaped island escape, not secret forest nobody else has discovered.

Is Nami Island Right for Your Trip?
Choose Nami if the walk itself is the attraction: avenues of tall trees, a riverside section, a cafe break and time to stop without watching a guide’s flag disappear. Families can make it a gentle outing, but walking distance, weather and queues still count. A stroller does not come with diplomatic immunity in a crowded photo lane.
Skip or postpone it if you need a guaranteed quiet landscape, expect every tree to match a promotional photograph, or would rather use the day for Seoul neighborhoods. Admission and Ferry: What You Actually Pay For
The operator’s admission page lists KRW 19,000 for regular admission with round-trip regular ferry travel. Discounted and special categories have their own eligibility rules. Check the applicable category rather than assuming every student or overseas visitor gets a discount.
The same page also lists a different motorboat-inbound package. Do not compare its price with ordinary ferry admission as if they were identical. Extra activities, food and transport to the wharf need a separate budget; the island ticket is not a Seoul transfer ticket.
The official ferry FAQ gives standard inbound service from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and standard outbound service from 8:05 a.m. to 9:05 p.m. The crossing takes about five minutes. These are different directions, not interchangeable last-boat times. Seasonal extensions and operational changes can override the standard pattern; check the notice for your date.
Getting There from Seoul Without Buying the Wrong Train Ticket
One practical independent route is an ITX-Cheongchun to Gapyeong Station, an onward transfer to Gapyeong Wharf, then the ferry. Check the actual departure station, travel-date timetable and ticket rules through Korail’s official English booking site. ITX-Cheongchun is not KTX, and a Seoul transport card does not replace its train ticket.
The Gyeongchun Line local service is another option. Compare the whole journey from your accommodation, not just the main train segment: getting across Seoul, waiting, transferring at Gapyeong and joining a ferry queue all take time. “About an hour from Seoul” is not a reliable door-to-door promise.
At Gapyeong, arrange the final connection to the wharf using a current map or local transport information. Taxi queues and traffic can make a short road leg slower than it looks. For the return, leave room for the island-side ferry queue and onward transfer before your reserved train. Avoid attaching a timed rail-bike booking directly to your hoped-for exit time.

A Relaxed First-Visit Walking Plan
Use three to four hours on the island as a flexible starting budget, not an official visit duration. Walk one of the well-known tree lanes, continue to a riverside section, then choose a cafe or meal break before heading back toward the ferry. Families, photography stops and busy queues can easily stretch that plan.
Do not treat every avenue as a separate appointment. If a lane is crowded, come back later or keep walking rather than spending the entire visit waiting for an empty frame. The quieter outer paths are part of the outing, not consolation prizes.
Pick up an island map and check walking distances and activity availability on arrival. If you want a bicycle or another paid activity, confirm current terms and allow time for it. Renting wheels does not make a crowded pedestrian path move faster.
Choose the Season for Its Tradeoffs

Summer: greener scenery, with heat, humidity and rain to plan around. Shade helps; it does not cancel a humid afternoon. Carry water and leave space for indoor breaks.

For a multi-stop day without a car, compare the extra transfer effort with a tour’s fixed island time.
