Aewol is not one café, one beach or one perfect sunset photo. It is a stretch of western Jeju coast that rewards a slower afternoon: a short walk beside the basalt, a stop at Gwakji, a coffee with an actual sea view, and enough time left to watch the sky change.
The useful thing to know before you go is that these stops are not all on the same doorstep. The Handam Coastal Trail links the Aewol side to Gwakji on foot, while Hyeopjae is a separate west-coast stop that needs another bus or drive. This guide builds a day that leaves room for both scenery and the small business of getting back to where you started.

Aewol is worth visiting in every season for the coast and cafés. Swimming is a different question: the 2026 managed beach period is over, and next year’s dates need a fresh official check. A pretty patch of water is not a substitute for a posted swimming zone.
The Handam Walk: Aewol to Gwakji
The Handam Coastal Trail is the simplest way to understand Aewol. Visit Jeju describes an approximately 1.2-km path from the Aewol Port side to Gwakji Gwamul Beach. It follows the shore rather than a busy road, with volcanic rock, sea views and places to pause along the way. The trail is listed as open year-round, though wind, rain and on-site restrictions still matter.
Allow about half an hour to an hour to walk one way, then add whatever time your camera and coffee plans demand. The path is short enough to sound like a warm-up and scenic enough to take much longer than you expected.
The important detail is the return. If you leave a car near Handam, either walk the same route back or arrange a bus or taxi from the Gwakji side. The coastline does not quietly turn into a loop just because your legs would prefer it. Wear shoes that handle uneven or wet sections, and keep back from wave-washed rocks in rough weather.
Gwakji Beach: Walk, Sunset or Seasonal Swim
Gwakji Gwamul Beach is the natural end of the Handam walk. It has open sand and a different feel from the café-heavy Aewol side, so it is worth reaching even if you are not planning to enter the water. The nearby spring-water bath is part of the beach’s local character, but check what facilities are actually open on the day.
The 2026 managed swimming season for Gwakji ended September 6; standard beach hours during that period were 10:00–19:00. Outside those dates, make this a beach walk or sunset stop and follow posted restrictions. Never assume the presence of sand means lifeguards are on duty.
How to Get to Aewol
By bus
Visit Jeju lists bus 202 to the Handam-dong area from the Jeju City side, and the same route serves the Gwakji Gwamul Beach stop. Use Naver Map or KakaoMap on the day for the correct direction and return departure. With public transport, the tidy plan is Handam walk plus Gwakji, with one café stop; adding Hyeopjae is possible but makes the day longer.
By car or taxi
A car makes separate west-coast stops easier, but parking near popular cafés and trail entrances can take time on weekends. Choose your starting point before you drive, then decide whether you will return on foot to the parked car. A taxi is useful for a one-way trail plan if you do not want to retrace the walk; check availability rather than counting on a car appearing precisely at sunset.

Cafés Without Turning the Day Into a Queue
Aewol’s ocean-view cafés are part of its appeal, but the best choice is usually the one that fits your walking route and the weather—not necessarily the name currently travelling fastest through social media. Check opening hours, whether the sea-facing seats are indoors or outside, and how long you want to stay before sunset.

Coastal Road and Sunset
The wider Aewol coastal road is best treated as a drive with selected stops, not one continuous walking route. Pull over only where parking is permitted; a beautiful view does not improve a blocked lane. If you are travelling by bus, stay around the Handam–Gwakji corridor rather than trying to chase every viewpoint along the coast.
For sunset, choose the trail, Gwakji shore or a café with a clear western view. Arrive early enough to find a place and look at the forecast: cloud and wind change the scene as much as the clock does. A sunset is an event with no late admission, which is mildly rude but useful to remember.
A Half-Day Route That Actually Fits
- Arrive at the Aewol/Handam side in the afternoon; check the weather and your return transport.
- Walk the roughly 1.2-km Handam trail toward Gwakji, stopping for the coast rather than a stopwatch.
- Spend time at Gwakji Beach, then choose one café or a simple meal.
- Stay for sunset if conditions are good. Walk back, take a confirmed bus or book a taxi—whichever you planned before the sky got distracting.
If you have a car and a full day, add Hyeopjae earlier, then come back toward Aewol for the walk and evening light. Hyeopjae is not an extension of the Handam trail, so give the transfer its own time. On an early-flight day, skip the sunset and keep this as a shorter coastal visit.
Where to Stay Around Aewol
Aewol works as a base when cafés, a quieter coastal rhythm and western Jeju stops matter more than being close to every island attraction.
