Hahoe Folk Village looks close to Andong on a map. It is not close in the way a traveler with a 5:00 p.m. train hopes it is.
The UNESCO-listed village sits about 25 kilometers west of central Andong, beyond both Andong Station and the intercity bus terminal. Public buses work, but they do not run like a Seoul subway. Add the ticket area, the short internal shuttle and the walk into the village, and a rushed visit can become a collection of excellent views seen mostly from behind a watch.

Hahoe is open year-round. Those hours describe admission, not the time you should arrive. For a satisfying visit, allow three to four hours around the village complex. Add more if the mask dance or Buyongdae viewpoint matters.
First Fix the Geography
The words “Andong,” “Hahoe Village” and “Hahoe Market” can appear on one day plan, but they are not one walkable zone.
Andong Station and Andong Bus Terminal sit beside each other on the western side of Andong. This is the practical arrival point for travelers from Seoul, Busan and other cities.
Central Andong—including the old downtown and Andong Gu Market's jjimdak alley—is east of the station area. It makes a better evening base than the station if you want restaurants and a little life after dark.
Hahoe Folk Village is farther west in Pungcheon-myeon. The main parking area, restaurants, market, mask museum and ticket office come before the protected village. Visitors normally buy a ticket there and use the short local shuttle to the village entrance.
That final transfer is easy, but it consumes time. “Arrive at Hahoe at 1:45” should mean standing near the village entrance, not stepping off an intercity bus with 15 minutes left before a performance.
Can You Really Visit from Seoul in One Day?
Yes, provided you make the day about Hahoe rather than treating it as a side quest after three other attractions.
Direct KTX-Eum trains from Cheongnyangni connect Seoul with Andong in roughly two hours on the fastest services. Exact times and stopping patterns vary. Seoul Station also appears in some journey searches, but Cheongnyangni is the useful first station to check for direct Andong service.

A workable independent day usually looks like this:
- Take an early morning train from Cheongnyangni.
- Reach Andong around midmorning.
- Go directly from the station area to Hahoe.
- Enter before lunch or shortly after noon.
- Watch the mask dance if it operates that day.
- Leave Hahoe with at least 90 minutes before your train—more on weekends and festival dates.
The last point is not padding. A rural bus can be delayed, a taxi may take time to arrive, and the village shuttle can have a queue. The train will not admire your detailed explanation of traditional architecture.
Three Ways to Handle the Andong–Hahoe Transfer
Public Bus: Cheapest, Least Forgiving
Andong city buses serve Hahoe Village from the station and terminal area. Current tourism guidance identifies bus 246, with a journey of about one hour from the terminal-area stop to Hahoe. Timetables change, and rural routes can have long gaps.
Use Andong's official bus information or a Korean map app on the morning of travel. Naver Map and KakaoMap usually understand local bus stops better than an international map service. Search the Korean destination name 안동하회마을 and inspect the return trip before boarding the outbound bus.
Have a transport card with balance, but carry a little cash as backup. Stand where the app shows the correct direction; stops with nearly identical names may sit on opposite sides of a road. On the return, arrive at the stop early. This is not the moment to discover that “three minutes away” refers to the bus, not your legs.
Public bus is a good choice for travelers staying overnight. For a Seoul day trip with a fixed return train, it is viable only when the timetable leaves a generous cushion.
Taxi: Best for Two to Four People on a Tight Day
A taxi from Andong Station or the terminal to Hahoe typically takes around 25–35 minutes depending on traffic. Ask the driver for 안동하회마을 매표소—the Hahoe Village ticket office—not merely “Hahoe.”
The outbound taxi is usually straightforward. The return deserves planning. Ask the tourist information desk or ticket office how to call a local taxi, or use a Korean taxi app if your account works in Korea. Do not assume a line of empty cars will be waiting at closing time.
Splitting the fare can make a taxi the practical winner for a small group. You buy time, and time is the scarce resource on this route.
Guided Tour: Best When You Want More Than Hahoe
A tour makes sense when your wish list includes Hahoe plus a Confucian academy or viewpoint. These sights are spread around rural Andong, so independent public transport quickly becomes the whole plot.

The Route Inside Hahoe That Does Not Waste the Afternoon
Start at the visitor complex rather than rushing past it. The Hahoe World Mask Museum is near the ticket and parking area, and museum admission is currently free. Its galleries explain why the smiling wooden faces are more than decorative souvenirs.
After buying the village ticket, take the short shuttle to the protected settlement. Then use a loose clockwise loop:
- enter through the main approach and orient yourself at the village map;
- follow the central lanes past thatched homes and tiled-roof clan houses;
- visit the Samsindang guardian tree area;
- continue toward the river and pine forest;
- return through a different lane rather than retracing the main souvenir route.
Allow 90 minutes for a basic village walk, or two hours if you like photography, architecture or quiet detours. Hahoe is still a living village. Some houses are private, gates may be closed, and drones are a poor way to introduce yourself to residents.
Shoes matter. The lanes mix packed earth, stone and uneven edges. After rain they can be muddy; in dry weather dust finds white sneakers with remarkable professional focus.
Time the Mask Dance Before You Time Lunch
The Hahoe Byeolsingut Mask Dance is the strongest reason to organize the day around a clock. Current tourism information lists performances from March through December on Tuesday–Sunday and public holidays, generally 2:00–3:00 p.m. January and February have a reduced weekend schedule. The performance is listed as free.
Schedules can change because of weather, special events and production needs. Check the village's notice board or ask at the information desk when you arrive. Do not promise children—or a camera with three heavy lenses—that a performance exists until the day's schedule confirms it.
For a 2:00 p.m. show, enter the village by about 12:30 p.m. Walk for an hour, reach the performance area 20–30 minutes early, watch the show, then finish the village loop afterward. On busy weekends, arriving earlier improves both seating and sanity.
The performance uses masks, music, satire and broad physical comedy. You do not need fluent Korean to understand who is pompous, flirtatious or having a very bad day. Multilingual explanations may be available, but the movement carries much of the story.
Buyongdae Is Not a Five-Minute Add-On
Buyongdae Cliff gives the famous elevated view over Hahoe's river bend. Geographically it faces the village; logistically it is on the opposite side of the river.
Access conditions and seasonal river crossings can change. If no boat service is operating, reaching the viewpoint trail requires a road transfer around the river. The final climb is short but steep enough to punish a casual “we have twenty minutes” decision.
Add Buyongdae only if you have private transport, a tour that explicitly includes it, or an overnight schedule. For a public-bus day trip from Seoul, the village and mask performance already fill the useful daylight. A viewpoint is less impressive when viewed through the rear window of a departing train.
Byeongsan Seowon is another tempting extension. It pairs beautifully with Hahoe but sits on a separate rural road. Treat it as a half-day combination with a taxi or tour, not as a walk from the village.
Where to Eat Without Breaking the Route
The easiest lunch is at the restaurant area near the Hahoe ticket office and market. Eat before entering the village if you are aiming for the afternoon performance. Choices may include Andong specialties such as heotjesabap, salted mackerel, noodles and jjimdak, though individual opening days vary.
For dinner, central Andong offers more variety. Andong Gu Market's jjimdak alley is the classic stop: braised chicken, vegetables and glass noodles in a soy-based sauce. Portions are often designed for sharing. Solo travelers should check portion sizes before ordering enough chicken to establish a small catering business.
Keep a bottle of water with you. Cafés and small shops exist, but opening hours inside a heritage village are not as standardized as a convenience store beside Seoul Station.
Stay in Andong When the Calendar Is Busy
An overnight stay changes the trip from a transport exercise into a cultural visit. It is especially valuable during autumn weekends, national holidays and the Andong International Maskdance Festival.
There are three useful accommodation zones:
- Central Andong: best for restaurants, Gu Market and an evening walk.
- Andong Station/Terminal: best for an early departure or late arrival, but quieter at night.
- Hahoe-area hanok stays: best for atmosphere and a slow morning; check bathroom arrangements, check-in time and transport carefully.

Day 1: Seoul to Andong, Then Hahoe
Take a morning train from Cheongnyangni and leave large luggage at your hotel or the station if available. Reach the Hahoe ticket area around noon, eat lunch, confirm the mask-dance schedule and enter the village.
Walk the interior before the performance, watch the 2:00 p.m. show if scheduled, then complete the riverside loop. Return to central Andong before dinner. Eat jjimdak or salted mackerel and avoid scheduling another major attraction. You have already walked a village, decoded a rural bus and made peace with at least one timetable.
Day 2: Choose One Addition
Pick Dosan Seowon for a deeper Confucian-history day, Byeongsan Seowon and Buyongdae for scenery around Hahoe, or Woryeonggyo Bridge and central Andong for the easiest second day.

Seasonal Problems Worth Planning For
Summer Heat and Rain
Hahoe has exposed lanes, limited deep shade on some stretches and humid summers. Start early, bring water and carry sun protection. During heavy rain, outdoor performances or river-related access may change.
Autumn Crowds
Late September and October bring comfortable walking weather, festivals and school or tour groups. Book intercity transport first. Arrive before the middle of the day and do not build a return plan around the final theoretical bus.
