One of the biggest surprises during my first trip to Seoul was how many great experiences didn’t cost anything.
Before visiting Korea, I assumed I would need to spend money on attractions every day. Instead, some of my favorite memories came from simple activities like walking along the Han River, exploring traditional neighborhoods, and discovering hidden corners of the city.
If you’re traveling on a budget, the good news is that Seoul offers plenty of free attractions. In fact, many of the places that visitors remember most cost absolutely nothing.
Here are the best free things to do in Seoul in 2026.
Table of contents
1. Walk Along the Han River
The Han River is one of Seoul’s most popular public spaces.
Locals come here to exercise, ride bicycles, enjoy picnics, and relax after work.
I spent an entire evening walking along the river without spending a single won and still felt like I had experienced an important part of Seoul.
Sunset is especially beautiful.
For more information, check out our Han River Guide.
2. Explore Bukchon Hanok Village

Bukchon Hanok Village offers a glimpse into Korea’s traditional past.
The neighborhood is filled with narrow streets, historic hanok houses, and excellent photo opportunities.
Although it is one of Seoul’s most famous attractions, visiting the village itself is completely free.
I recommend arriving early in the morning before the crowds appear.

3. Visit Gwanghwamun Square

Gwanghwamun Square sits in the heart of Seoul and serves as one of the city’s most important public spaces.
Visitors can see:
- King Sejong Statue
- Admiral Yi Sun-sin Statue
- Views of Gyeongbokgung Palace
- Surrounding mountain scenery
It’s also one of the best places to begin exploring central Seoul.
4. Walk Along Cheonggyecheon Stream

Cheonggyecheon Stream is one of my favorite places in downtown Seoul.
The stream stretches through the city center and provides a peaceful escape from busy streets and traffic.
During summer, many people stop here to cool off and relax.
At night, the illuminated pathways create a completely different atmosphere.
5. Watch Street Performers in Hongdae

Hongdae is famous for its youthful energy and creative atmosphere.
On many evenings, especially Fridays and Saturdays, visitors can watch free performances from:
- Musicians
- Dance groups
- Singers
- Street entertainers
Even if you don’t spend money, simply walking around Hongdae can be entertaining for hours.

6. Hike the Namsan Walking Trails

Many tourists pay to visit observation decks, but one of the best experiences is actually the walk itself.
The trails around Namsan offer beautiful city views and plenty of shaded paths.
The higher you climb, the better the scenery becomes.
You can even enjoy many of the views without purchasing a ticket for N Seoul Tower.
Read our N Seoul Tower Guide for more details.
7. Relax at Seoul Forest

Seoul Forest has become one of the city’s most popular green spaces.
The park features:
- Walking paths
- Open lawns
- Seasonal flowers
- Art installations
It is also located near Seongsu-dong, one of Seoul’s trendiest neighborhoods.
After exploring the park, you can continue your day in Seongsu.
See our Seongsu-dong Travel Guide for nearby attractions.
8. Visit Bongeunsa Temple
Located in Gangnam, Bongeunsa Temple offers a peaceful atmosphere that feels far removed from the surrounding skyscrapers.
Admission is free.
The contrast between traditional architecture and modern Seoul makes the temple particularly interesting.
Many visitors are surprised by how quiet the area feels despite its central location.
9. Explore the National Museum of Korea
The National Museum of Korea is one of the best free attractions in the country.
The permanent exhibitions are free to enter and cover thousands of years of Korean history.
Even if museums are not usually your thing, the scale of the collection is impressive.
Budget travelers should not overlook this place.
10. Visit Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP)
Dongdaemun Design Plaza is one of Seoul’s most recognizable modern landmarks.
While some exhibitions require tickets, exploring the outdoor areas and futuristic architecture is completely free.
The area becomes especially photogenic after sunset when the lights come on.

How Much Money Can You Actually Save?
Many travelers underestimate how much they can save by focusing on free attractions.
A typical day visiting paid attractions might cost ₩20,000 to ₩50,000 or more.
By combining places like Bukchon Hanok Village, Cheonggyecheon Stream, the Han River, and Hongdae, it’s possible to enjoy a full day in Seoul without spending anything on admission fees.
You can find a full daily budget example in our How to Visit Seoul on $50 a Day guide.

Final Thoughts
Some of my favorite experiences in Seoul turned out to be completely free.
Walking through Bukchon’s quiet alleys, relaxing by the Han River at sunset, watching performers in Hongdae, and exploring Seoul Forest all felt more memorable than many paid attractions.
If you’re visiting Seoul in 2026, don’t assume you need a large budget to enjoy the city. Some of Seoul’s best experiences are available to everyone, and they don’t cost a thing.
