The Busan International Film Festival is easy to attend and surprisingly easy to plan badly.
The common version goes like this: choose six films, notice that two start at the same time, discover the third is screening across town, then spend dinner running through Centum City with a convenience-store triangle gimbap. Cinema has produced worse tragedies, but this one is avoidable.
The 31st Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) runs from Tuesday, October 6 through Thursday, October 15, 2026. This year’s program includes 315 films, with 246 official selections from 59 countries and 69 Community BIFF titles. Screenings use 31 screens across eight theaters, although most first-time visitors will spend much of their time in the Centum City cluster.
The urgent dates arrive before October. The full screening schedule is due on September 11 at 17:00 KST. Special-program tickets open on September 17 at 14:00 KST, followed by general screenings on September 21 at 14:00 KST.
Save those times in Korea Standard Time. “I will check after lunch” is not a ticket strategy when your lunch happens twelve time zones away.

BIFF says all standard seats are sold online. Remaining seats and cancellations may appear at festival ticket boxes, but a screening that sells out online is not guaranteed to receive a magical second pile of chairs at the venue.
Reservations are limited to two tickets per screening code. Mobile tickets can be used directly and can also be exchanged for paper tickets. Cancellations and refunds are available until 60 minutes before a screening, with applicable cancellation fees depending on timing.
Use the official BIFF ticket announcement for any rule that conflicts with an older blog post or social-media screenshot.
Build a Shortlist Before Sales Open
Do not begin with titles alone. Begin with four columns:
- screening code;
- venue;
- start and finish time;
- priority: must-see, strong backup or convenient filler.
Add at least 30 minutes between screenings in the same Centum cluster. Add more if either film includes a guest visit, if you want food, or if the next venue is not inside the same building. A two-hour film does not end exactly two hours after the scheduled start once introductions, applause and audience movement join the program.
For different neighborhoods, think in hours rather than subway stops. Community BIFF uses MEGABOX Busan Theater and Catholic Center Space 101.1 around the older central-city area, well away from Centum City. Combining a Nampo-area screening and a Centum screening can work. Combining them with a 20-minute gap cannot.
A Ticket Order That Works
- buy the one difficult special event first on September 17;
- on September 21, secure your highest-priority general screening;
- choose the second film in the same venue cluster;
- keep one alternative at a different time, not merely a different seat;
- take screenshots of confirmation details, but use the live mobile ticket for entry.
Do not create five separate browser tabs and attempt simultaneous payment. Duplicate holds, expiring sessions and card verification can leave you with fewer tickets and considerably more character development.
What Is Actually Screening in 2026?
The scale is large: 246 official selections and 69 Community BIFF films. The official lineup includes competition titles, major international festival films, Korean premieres, documentaries, animation, television and streaming work.
The festival’s Open Cinema program presents seven outdoor-friendly films at the Busan Cinema Center Roof Theater. A special Japanese animation program brings together 12 Japanese works plus the French classic The King and the Mockingbird. The Actors’ House lineup includes Lee Minho, Kim Goeun, Kim Minha, Ryu Seung-ryong, Ju Jihoon and Shin Mina.
Actors’ House tickets are listed at KRW 15,000 and open with the first ticket round on September 17. A famous guest name does not mean every associated film includes a stage greeting. Read the individual event page rather than inferring attendance from the poster.
The program also includes talks, outdoor greetings, Master Classes and Cine Classes. These can be more memorable than adding a fourth feature to an already full day. They also sell quickly because the room has fewer seats than your optimism assumes.
The Venue Map Is Really Two Trips
Centum City: The Main Festival Base
The core venues are concentrated around Centum City:
- Busan Cinema Center;
- CGV Centum City;
- LOTTE CINEMA Centum City;
- KOFIC Theater;
- Sohyang Theatre Woori Bank Hall;
- Busan Community Media Center Open Hall.
This is the efficient zone. Centum City Station on Busan Metro Line 2 serves the district, and several venues are walkable from one another. “Walkable” still requires checking the exact building and floor. Shinsegae Centum City is enormous, and entering the wrong side can turn a simple cinema transfer into an indoor expedition.
Busan Cinema Center is the visual anchor, not the location of every BIFF screening. Check the theater name on the ticket before following the crowd.
Nampo and Jung-gu: Community BIFF
Community BIFF uses MEGABOX Busan Theater and Catholic Center Space 101.1. This area fits naturally with BIFF Square, Nampo-dong and Jagalchi Market, but it is not next door to Centum City.

The important naming trap: BIFF Square is not the Busan Cinema Center. One is in Nampo; the other is in Centum City. A taxi driver can only solve the destination you actually provide.
Where to Stay for BIFF
Centum City: Best for Serious Screening Days
Stay here if you plan two or more screenings most days, expect late events or value the ability to return to the hotel between films. It is the least romantic answer and often the smartest.
The tradeoff is nightlife. Centum has malls, restaurants and polished convenience, but it does not feel like a beach holiday after the final credits.
Haeundae: Best Festival-and-Busan Balance
Haeundae sits on Line 2 and keeps you close to Centum while providing beach walks, restaurants and more evening energy. It works well for first-time visitors attending one or two festival days.

Gwangalli: Best for Evenings
Gwangalli offers bridge views, bars and a good post-screening atmosphere. Line 2 access makes Centum practical, though you still need to walk or transfer from the station depending on your accommodation.

Seomyeon: Best for Mixed City Plans
Seomyeon is a transport and nightlife hub. It suits travelers dividing their time between BIFF, food, shopping and western Busan. The downside is commuting to Centum for every screening day.
Nampo: Best for Community BIFF, Not Main-Venue Marathons
Nampo is convenient for BIFF Square, markets and Community BIFF. It is a poor base for three consecutive days centered on Busan Cinema Center.

A Three-Day First-Timer Plan
Day 1: Learn the Centum Cluster
Arrive before your first screening. Walk from Centum City Station to Busan Cinema Center, locate the correct ticket box and identify the other theaters you will use.
Book one afternoon film and one evening film in the Centum cluster. Leave the middle open for the festival plaza, food and any event that becomes available. Two well-chosen screenings beat three films separated by frantic hallway meals.
Day 2: Film, Talk and Gwangalli
Choose a morning or early-afternoon screening, then one guest event or second film. Head to Gwangalli after the final session if the weather is clear.
Do not reserve a late dinner at the exact scheduled finish time. Guest visits can extend the experience, audience exits take time and restaurant kitchens have last-order rules.
Day 3: Community BIFF and Old Busan
Move the day west. Combine a Community BIFF program with BIFF Square, Gukje Market and Jagalchi. These sights share a sensible route; Haeundae does not.

Subtitles: Check the Individual Screening
BIFF is international, but “international film festival” does not guarantee that every film provides the subtitle language you need.
The festival prepares Korean subtitles for non-Korean official selections and requires English-language materials from filmmakers, but the audience-facing screening page remains the authority for the actual subtitle display. Some Korean-language films may not provide English subtitles. Some multilingual films may use different combinations.
Check the language and subtitle icons on each film page before buying. Do not assume a Q&A will be interpreted into English either; verify the event-language information separately.
If you are choosing between two films, subtitle certainty is a perfectly respectable deciding factor. Ninety minutes of visually appreciating an untranslated legal drama is a very advanced form of cultural immersion.
Booking Problems International Visitors Should Expect
The Payment Does Not Complete
Have more than one internationally enabled card ready. Allow pop-ups and complete any bank verification promptly. Do not repeatedly submit the payment if the page appears frozen; check your reservation account and card alerts first.
The Film Sells Out During Checkout
Use your preselected backup. Do not spend 20 minutes refreshing while the backup screening also sells out. Cancellations can return later, but they are a bonus rather than a plan.
You Bought the Wrong Time or Venue
BIFF permits cancellations until 60 minutes before the screening, subject to its fee rules. Correct the booking early. A ticket at the wrong theater is not improved by determined subway travel.
Your Phone Battery Is Low
Carry a small power bank and save the booking details offline. Mobile tickets are faster for entry, but only while the mobile part remains alive.
The On-Site Line Looks Promising
Ask which screening the line serves before joining it. On-site inventory covers seats unsold online or returned through cancellation; it is not a general second release.
Arriving in Busan
From Seoul by KTX
KTX from Seoul Station to Busan Station is usually the simplest intercity route. Busan Station is not in Centum City, so allow time for the local transfer. The subway route requires a Line 1 to Line 2 transfer; a taxi can be faster only when traffic cooperates.

From Gimhae International Airport
The light rail connects the airport area with the Busan subway network via Sasang. Reaching Haeundae or Centum requires transfers and takes longer than the distance looks on a map.
For a late arrival with luggage, compare the live taxi time and cost against public transport. For daytime travel, the rail-and-subway route is predictable and avoids road traffic.
Using Taxis After Late Screenings
Save the hotel address in Korean. Demand can rise after major events and outdoor screenings, while road pickup areas around Busan Cinema Center may be busy. Walk a few minutes away from the main exit only if the route is well lit and you know where the legal pickup point is.
Eating Without Missing the Film
Centum City has substantial food options in malls and department stores, but queues build during meal times and last orders do not care about your director Q&A.
Use three levels:
- a proper meal during a gap of at least 90 minutes;
- a quick restaurant or food-court meal during a shorter break;
- a convenience-store backup carried before entering the venue area.
Check whether outside food is allowed inside the individual theater. Strong-smelling meals and quiet films are rarely a winning double feature.
For a dedicated food evening, leave Centum after the final screening and use Haeundae, Gwangalli or Seomyeon. Do not cross the city for lunch between two films.
October Weather and Outdoor Screenings
Early October in Busan is usually comfortable for walking, but evenings near the water can feel cooler and windier than the afternoon. Pack a light jacket or wind-resistant layer even if daytime weather looks warm.
Open Cinema uses the outdoor Roof Theater. Check the same-day festival notice for rain, wind or operational changes. Bring a light layer you can keep on during the film and avoid a large umbrella that becomes an architectural feature for the row behind you.

Common Scheduling Mistakes
- booking films by title without checking their venues;
- scheduling every minute and leaving no food or bathroom time;
- assuming BIFF Square and Busan Cinema Center are adjacent;
- choosing Nampo accommodation for a Centum-heavy program;
- buying a Korean-language film without checking English subtitles;
- planning a KTX arrival less than two hours before a priority screening;
- treating a celebrity’s festival attendance as proof of a stage greeting;
- waiting for on-site tickets without a backup activity.
The festival is more enjoyable when it still feels like Busan. Leave one evening for the beach, one meal that is not eaten from packaging and enough empty space for a surprise screening or talk.
